mar26 complete
hello! my new year's resolution for 2026 was to create one game a month. the completion of beetlebug marks me being 1/4 of the way on that goal.
i was unavailable from middle fo feb to beginning of the this month so my momentum coming from the past 2 months slowed down a bit. i also had to take some time getting into the swing of work. but coming into this jam, i had a bit of trouble figuring out what i wanted to do. the first idea was Animal Crossing catching bugs but i couldn't figure out a core way to make it more fun on it's own. in the end i kept procrastinating to the last 3 days and took inspiration from the following games:
- Wii Play: Fishing Game
- Kabuto Park
these games helped give me a sense of direction for style and gameplay feel while still trying to make it my own. i learned a lot more about state machines (through the beetles), OOP, custom signals & handler functions, and math in game dev (through the skill check). i also tried 2D Illustration art instead of pixel art this time around and i thought it gave a nice touch!!
i did have to leave out a lot of additional fine-tuning / polish goals i had before the end of the jam, which included but aren't limited to:
- animations
- sfx
- game over screen
- name of beetles caught
despite the procrasination, i'm quite happy with how this turned out.
huge shoutout to @snowinfinity.studio (IG) for the track!
onto April's game!
